: New Beginnings Church in Brooklyn, NY

Pastor Jaime Zelaya received a call from someone at the State Convention. They had heard that he was hosting a tri-lingual worship service and they wanted to know more about this ground breaking strategy. Jaime was confused, because he assumed that there were many churches in New York City and beyond that were hosting tri-lingual services. Tim told him that there were churches that held different services in different languages, but not one service for three.

Pastor Jaime Zelaya explained that as the church began to reach more and more Chinese and Spanish speaking congregants, they tried to establish different services for the different languages and cultures. He noticed a resistance to the separation and realized that the while language was a barrier, the desire to love, fellowship, and learn different culture had created a community that the people did not want to lose. With this knowledge, he has invested even more energy into infusing the Chinese language into the service. The result has been drastic. In the last month, the church has added over 20 new recurring visitors….and you guessed it…they are Chinese.

Jaime is experiencing a lot of new found support from the MNYBA and the State Convention. Seven churches are booked to come and learn Urban Ministry from him this spring/summer. The small stipend to George Russ and connection to MNYBA is vital to this taking place. Praise God. I just got off the phone with him and he is very excited. We are now discussing ways to allow technology to help foster this three language approach.
