The Priority of God’s Word

Psalms 119:105 (NKJV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

What priority does the word of God have each day in your life? Is it an absolute essential part of your day or is it a book that you get to when everything else is done. David shows us many aspects of the word of God which proved to lead to a victorious life. Today’s verse shows that God’s word was the very illumination that David needed to take each step in life. David read and meditated upon God’s word in order to make each decision in life. In order for us to practice this, we must faithfully read God’s word, meditate on His word and hide it in our heart (memorize it).
David expressed that his need for the word of God was to the point that his nourishment and his very life depended on it. David desired God and His word as much as his body needed its next breath or next drink of water. “1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (Ps. 42:1-2, NKJV). David wanted to stay in the presence of God continually.

The word of God not only was essential to David, but he also experienced great pleasure spending time with God and listening to what God had to say. David displayed the same excitement for the word of God as does a kid in a candy store. “How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalms 119:103, NKJV).

God’s word also grants us contentment. When we are content in God, He is the satisfaction of our heart. “For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.” (Psalms 107:9, NKJV). The amazing aspect of God and His word is the fact that when God fill’s our heart, He will always give us just enough so that we will continue to long for Him. Just as a meal of food satisfies us until the next meal, even so the word of God encourages us, guides us, enlightens us, builds us up, helps us, and instructs us unto contentment. God shows us what we need to know and He knows how much we can handle right now. But, we always realize that there is more that we can learn. God will enlighten our path and be the fulfillment of our heart. We just need to make it a priority to faithfully read His word, meditate in it and ask the Spirit of God to guide us moment by moment.

Our Provision

Matthew 6:11 (NKJV)
Give us this day our daily bread.

The next aspect of our Lord’s classic prayer focuses on provision for our daily needs. He’s showing us that we need to completely depend upon the Father for all of our daily provisions. We also need to be careful and not be anxious about our needs. Later on in Matt. 6 Jesus teaches, “25 Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?“(Matthew 6:25-26, NKJV). He is trying to emphasize that we must trust in God for provision and not trust in the provision itself. The provision can leave at any time, God will not leave.

Solomon emphasized that he wanted God’s provision and only the amount of provision that the infinite God in His infinite wisdom supplied. He tells us in Proverbs 30, “ 8 Remove falsehood and lies far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches— feed me with the food allotted to me. 9 Lest I be full and deny You, and say, “Who is the LORD?”, or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God.” (Prov. 30:8-9, NJKV). He wanted enough so that his full trust would be in God’s provision, but not so little that he was tempted to steal.

Paul also reminds us to trust only in God,” And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:19, NKJV). God owns the universe and all the wealth in the world. He loves us infinitely, so why would He not want to provide for all our needs? The only reason God does not supply a gift for us is the fact that it would be better for us not to have it. He knows our needs, wants and limits and He will provide what is for our best good and His greatest glory. If He has given much, He desires that we give out of that abundance. If He refrains from giving, He wants our trust in Him to be strengthened in that area.
